History:
Appleton Estate is a sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica that has been handcrafting rums since 1749. They produce a wide variety of aged rums, as well as standard gold and white rums. Located in the heart of the country's sugar cane belt, it is the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica. The Estate's sugar cane is harvested by machine as well as the old-fashioned way—by men wielding machetes. The Appleton Estate covers more than 11,000 acres (4,500 ha) of land.
The parent company, J. Wray and Nephew Ltd., also produces the popular Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum.

Products:
The Appleton Estate produces traditional pot still rums made in copper pot stills tropically minimum aged (youngest rum in blend listed obviously on the front of the bottle as the age statement) in American oak barrels.
The Appleton Estate Produce (in order of price/quality);
Appleton Estate V/X
Appleton Estate Reserve 8 year old (Minimum aged) not available in all territories
Appleton Estate Extra 12 year old (Minimum Aged)
Appleton Estate Master Blenders Legacy (Blend of up to 30 year old rums)
Appleton Estate 21 year old (Minimum Aged)
Appleton estate exclusive distillery only
Appleton Estate 30 year old (Minimum Aged)

All of these rums are award winning and have performed well at international spirit ratings competitions. For example, the "Extra 12yr" edition was awarded a 96-100 rating at the 2008 Wine Enthusiasts competition. The Appleton Estate Rum Tour is a major tourist destination in the island. Appleton Rum and Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum have been awarded a Grand Gold Award at the 2011 World Quality Selections, organized by Monde Selection. Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum has been honored the International High Quality Trophy for consistently turning in gold and Grand Gold Award performances at the awards. These awards are a confirmation for exceptional quality of the products.

History:
Captain Morgan is a brand of rum produced by alcohol conglomerate Diageo. It is named after the 17th-century, Welsh privateer of the Caribbean, Sir Henry Morgan who died on 26 August 1688. Since 2011, the label has used the slogan, "To Life, Love and Loot."

In 1944, the Seagram Company started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. Seagram CEO Samuel Bronfman purchased a distillery named Long Pond from the Jamaican government. Among the buyers of raw rum from the Long Pond distillery was a Kingston pharmacy named Levy Brothers. The Levy family had been purchasing raw rum, adding medicinal herbs and spices, aging, and bottling it. Bronfman liked the rum product and bought the rights to it.
In the 1950s the governments of both the United States and its Puerto Rico commonwealth territory instituted a number of job creation programs in Puerto Rico. Taxes on rum entering the contiguous 48 states from Puerto Rico were made lower than those on rum coming from foreign countries. At this time both Seagram's and the Bacardi family built large new plants near San Juan. In 1985, Seagrams sold its rum distillery and manufacturing facilities in Camuy and Arecibo — and doing business as Puerto Rican Destillers — to Destilería Serrallés, a Puerto Rican concern that had been producing the Don Q brand in Puerto Rico since 1865. As part of the contract Seagrams also licensed to Serralles the rights to produce and distribute the "Captain Morgan" brand in Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean until 2012.
In 2001, Seagrams sold the "Captain Morgan" brand to Diageo. Diageo made an announcement on June 24, 2008, that it intends to build and operate a new rum distillery on St. Croix, Virgin Islands beginning in 2010 and to source from it beginning at the end of their current supply contract in 2012.

In 1984, Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum was introduced to the United States. Captain Morgan is, by volume, the second largest brand of spirits in the United States, and the seventh largest worldwide. In 2007, 7.6 million 9-liter cases were sold. Most Captain Morgan rum is sold in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, South Africa, and Global Travel.
Although the pirate Henry Morgan is a figure of Jamaican culture, the Seagram's Captain Morgan Rum was labeled as a product of Puerto Rico, whereas the Captain Morgan Rum produced by J. Wray and Nephew Ltd. is labeled as a "product of Jamaica."

In 2010 two American territories, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands bickered over plans for the Captain Morgan to move operations to the U.S.V.I under tax incentives. The matter came to a head when it created a debate in the United States Congress over the USVI's attempt to use tax benefits to lure the company to that territory.

Distillation process
Captain Morgan's Rum is distilled from sugar cane. The combination of the type of yeasts employed for fermentation, distillation method, aging conditions, and blending determines the characteristic flavor of rum. Made with molasses, water, mash and yeast, Captain Morgan Original Spiced rum is distilled in a continuous still. Once distilled, the clear spirit is aged in oak barrels for up to a year, adding a golden color and character to the rum before the flavors and spices are added. The brand’s taste is achieved through a proprietary recipe, which is blended into the rum mixture at the final stages of production, making use of spices indigenous to the Caribbean Islands.

History:
The Frome Sugar Estate is one of the largest sugar manufacturing estates, that survived in Jamaica. The British sugar manufacturers of Tate and Lyle bought up 16 estates in Westmoreland and Hanover to form the West Indies Sugar Company (WISCO). When Frome Central Sugar Factory was opened in 1938, it was the most modern sugar factory in the Caribbean and the first central factory to be established in the island. A dispute with wage clerks flared into a violent strike in April-May 1938. Canefields were set on fire and a riot broke out on May 3. The police fired into the crowd, killing four people and wounding thirteen. Over 100 persons were arrested.[27] The strike at Frome triggered strikes in Kingston and other sections of the island that eventually led to reforms.

At present, Frome, along with Monymusk is the largest estate in the island. Together they produce about 1/3 of the Jamaican sugar crop. The total area of Frome is 30,000 acres, about 1/7 that of the parish. It is the greatest single source of employment of the parish.

Pan-Caribbean Limited, operators of the Monymusk and Frome sugar factories, has announced plans to pump some US$180 million to US$200 million into enhancing the plants, and upgrading equipment at the two facilities. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pan-Caribbean, Dr. Huaixiang Wu, made the announcement on January 15 2014.

Pan-Caribbean represents the Chinese firm COMPLANT International Sugar Industry Limited to whom the Jamaican Government divested its sugar assets at Frome, Monymusk and Bernard Lodge in August 2011.[28][29]

History:
Hampden estate is one of the oldest sugar estates in Jamaica. Renowned throughout Jamaica’s rum history for its full, intensely flavourful pot still rums, it continues today to be the quintessential heavy pot rum of choice throughout Europe and other parts of the world.

Surveyed in 1743, Hampden operated as a large sugar plantation circa 1753 under the ownership of Mr. Archibald Sterling of Scotland. In 1779 Mr. Sterling built the Hampden Great House of which the ground floor served as a rum store until the early 1900s. Post 1827 the estate came into the ownership of D.O. Kelly-Lawson. His daughter Ena Kelly-Lawson married a Mr. Farquharson, which on her death, inherited Hampden. The estate which is set within the famed “Queen of Spain Valley” consists of approximately 3500 acres. The Farquharson’s operated the estate producing sugar and rum until 2003 when it came under the ownership of the Jamaica Sugar Company of Jamaica. The estate is renowned for possessing the best cane lands in Jamaica producing the highest Ton Sugar from Ton Cane milled. During this time its rums were exported exclusively to Europe, England and Scotland.

In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd. owned by the Hussey family, acquired the estate via public bid through divestment procedures of the Jamaica Sugar Company assets, owned by the Government of Jamaica. A commitment by Everglades Farm to pump some US$6.2 million (J$549.8 million) into the Long Pond and Hampden sugar estates has brought renewed hope to the people of the region and to the economy of Trelawny. The Hussey family is committed to preserving the great traditions of Hampden and to the preservation of old family business values, a necessary prerequisite given that several of Hampden’s current customers can trace their orders back in excess of 50 years

Hampden sells a lot of high ester rums in bulk, from 50 esters all the way up to 1600 esters.

2009 divested to Everglades Farms Limited

Situated on approximately five (5) acres of land, the Long Pond Distillery is best known for its heavy bodied rums produced from its six (6) pot-stills and is used for blending. Long Pond Distillery is located on the North Coast of Jamaica in the parish of Trelawny in a hilly terrain with high rainfall. Having a tremendous production capacity, Long Pond also houses one column still that produces the very light, common clean, for the production of light rums.

Coupled with this distillery, production of heavy rums is the use of wooden vats which have bacteria, that is unique and peculiar to Long Pond, and contributes tremendously towards the flavours obtained for the very heavy rums.

Everglades Farms Limited have invested tens of millions of US dollars in their sugar, rum and molasses businesses at Long Pond and Hampden estates in Trelawny. Everglades' investment in Long Pond and Hampden is driven by matriarch Ruth of the Hussey family and covers three generations through her sons and daughters and to her grand-daughter, Christelle Harris.

One of her sons, Andrew Hussey, is the CEO of the company. The Hampden distillery has been in existence and making rum for over 250 years. In July 2009 Long Pond and Hampden with the accompanying distillery, sugar factories and the great house at the Hampden estate were divested through sale and lease agreements from the Government of Jamaica (GOJ).

The Hussey family, which runs the Terra Nova Hotel on Waterloo Road in Kingston, is turning the venerable great house, distillery and the farms on the 24,000-acre property into a attractive tourist destination.[32] [33]

Local conditions such as temperature, cane, soil, water and humidity play a great role in producing its unique rums which are now being fermented and distilled by its ultra modern distillery.

This distillery covers an expanse of some 5 acres and has the capability of producing clear, very neutral spirits, the common cleans, light flavoured rums and the Wedderburn and Plummer type rums. The heavier rums are used in small proportions to give flavour with its typical Jamaican congeners.

Presently, this distillery has potentially the largest production capacity of any distillery in Jamaica and utilizes the molasses produced at the Monymusk Sugar Factory which lies adjacent. It also houses six pot stills, three independent column stills and boasts a vast storage and packaging area.

History:
Myers's Rum is a brand of Jamaican dark rum produced by Diageo PLC.
Named after brand founder Fred L Myers, the molasses-derived blend of up to nine rums has been produced since 1879. According to the Diageo web site, Myer's rum uses only "pure Jamaican molasses" and is "produced from continuous and pot still distillation and is then matured for up to four years in white oak barrels".
The dark rum is commonly used in mixed drinks. It is also a common cooking ingredient in a variety of both sweet and savory recipes.
Dark rum differs from gold in that some residual molasses is retained in the final product, in order to slightly sweeten the flavor. Rum requires a minimum of two years aging, and dark rum such as Myers's is a blend of rums which can be aged upwards of 50 years. However, the amount of substantially aged rum in a blend is almost always very small.

Smith & Cross Jamaica Rum contains only Wedderburn and Plummer pot still distillates, famous for their notes of exotic fruits and spice. The incomparable complexity of this rum delivers a tour de force of flavour that historically made it a cornerstone of many classic rum drinks. The mark of Smith & Cross traces its lineage to 1788 as one of England’s oldest producers of sugar and spirits. Over time, the firm and its partners became prominent handlers of Jamaica Rum, with extensive underground cellars along the river Thames.

The Estate is located in the geographical center of the island of Jamaica, approximately forty miles by road to the north west of the capital Kingston and twenty eight miles due south of Ocho Rios, the major tourist center of Jamaica.

The name "Worthy Park" was patented in 1670 - this land was given to a Lieutenant Francis Price for his services to Cromwell during the English invasion and ultimate capture of Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655. The commercial production of cane and sugar began fifty years hereafter in 1720 and the production of cane and sugar has continued in every year to the present day.

The production of rum ceased in the 1948 under agreement with the Spirits Pool Association of Jamaica to curtail the over production of Jamaican Rum which occured in the years following World War II. Since 1670 Worthy Park has been owned by three families including the present proprietors. The Clarke Family acquired the Estate in 1918. Since the time of acquisition by the Clarkes, the Estate has remained private and has always been owner-operated and managed.

Currently Worthy Park is 3,600 hectares, mills 210,000 tonnes of cane annually of which 90,000 tonnes is produced by the Estate (the remainder purchased from Farmers) with an average annual sugar production of 24,000 tonnes and 7,000 tonnes of molasses. On the agricultural side, the Estate produces sugar cane at 83 tonnes per hectare and 10 tonnes of sugar per hectare.

The Worthy Park Sugar Factory's efficiency has been rated No. 1 in Jamaica every year since 1968.

The Distillery produces Pot Still rum which is the flavourful blending rum preferred by most blenders. The Copper Pot Still has a capacity of 18,000 litres of charge and produces 4,000 liters of absolute alcohol per 24 hour day.

Worthy park Estate offers Jamaican style Pot Still Rum for sale in bulk. The three types of rum offered are Light Pot Still Rum (ester range 60-119), Medium Pot Still Rum, (ester range 120-239), and Heavy Pot Still Rum (ester range 240-360).

It’s exported in bulk liquid shipping containers which hold 22,000 litres to 25,000 litres of rum at 85% alc/vol. During 2005, only unaged rum will be available however they are aging rum for future bulk rum sales.

Once the manufacturing process is complete, rum is often aged. Aging of Jamaican Rum is traditionally done in 200 litre American White Oak barrels. Jamaica is known to have the ideal climate for aging rum. The barrels impart both flavour and colour to the rum which starts as a colourless liquid.[36]
