The Army Welfare Project was established in 1974 with the aim of creating employment and post service benefits for ex-servicemen. The first distillery was established in Gelephu in 1976. The AWP expanded, leasing the Samdrup Jongkhar distillery from Namdik Enterprises in 1979 and the Samtse distillery from Bhutan Central Distillers in 1981.

Gelephu distillery has a secondary distillation unit with 7,500 LPD Re-Distillation Plant that converts Rectified Spirits (RS) to Extra Neutral Alcohol. The ENA manufactured in Gelephu Distillery has been found to be of very high quality. Gelephu Distillery has an installed production capacity of about 365,000 cases per annum. All premium brands are blended and bottled in Gelephu.It is responsible for Research & Development and Quality Control Center is located at Gelephu distillery. It is, also, the centre for manufacturing and distribution of flavouring materials and chemicals for AWP. [16][17]
