In the 1840's Mr. Jose Gomes D'Aguiar, the founder, started a Rum Business. In 1896 the four sons, Jose Jnr, Manoel, Francisco and John formed the partnership of D'Aguiar Bros. after the death of
Mr. J.G. D'Aguiar in 1893.

In 1966 the Private Family Company D'Aguiar Bros. Ltd. was converted into a public company, D'Aguiar Bros. (D.I.H.) Limited.

In 1969 was D'Aguiar Bros. (DIH) Ltd. merged with Banks Breweries Ltd. into a new company called Banks DIH Limited.
[Source: Company's web site, 2002]
The D'Aguiar Family has been in business in Guyana for over 150 years. In the 1840's Mr. Jose Gomes D'Aguiar, the founder, started a Rum Business which developed into a chain of Retail Spirit
Shops. In 1885 the business was expanded to include a Cocoa and Chocolate Factory and a Schooner Shipping Agency.

Mr. Peter Stanislaus D'Aguiar felt, however, that the date of historic importance was in 1896 when the four sons, Jose Jnr, Manoel, Francisco and John formed the partnership of D'Aguiar Bros. after
the death of Mr. J.G. D'Aguiar in 1893. In the same year the brothers purchased the Demerara Ice House which then consisted of a hotel, liquor bars and an aerated soft drink plant. The name 'Ice
House' was derived from the fact that ice was imported in schooners from Canada, hence the initials D.I.H.

Papers concerning D'Aguiar Bros. dating back to the beginning of the century show that the actual purchase of the old Demerara Ice House was made in October 1896 with the possession effective from November 16 of the same year. The purchase was arranged through the Hon. J.H. de Jonge, auctioneer. The price, $50,000.00, a substantial sum in those days was for buildings only. Eventually, a twenty-one year lease was negotiated from the Crown in whose title all lands were vested in those days. It was not until 1929 that the land was bought outright from the Government. In that year Dr. J.G. D'Aguiar (Mr. Peter d'Aguiar's father) then the sole proprietor following the death of his brothers, formed the company of D'Aguiar Bros. Limited.

Mrs. P.M. D'Aguiar became the principal shareholder on the death of her husband, Dr. J.G. D'Aguiar. The business faltered and was at a point of bankruptcy. She was offered the paltry sum of
$100,000.00 for the business as a going concern, but she refused to sell, as she was convinced that her youngest son, Peter D'Aguiar, should be given the opportunity as he appeared to have the
business acumen to salvage the company and to build it into a thriving concern.

In 1934 at the age of twenty-two, Peter took over as Managing Director of D'Aguiar Bros. Ltd.

Peter concentrated on the manufacturing side, especially soft drinks and rum, he borrowed heavily to re-finance the business. Gradually old debts were paid off and the business began to flourish
again. By 1938 he was able to install the most modern machinery in the country.

In 1942 Peter acquired the franchise for Pepsi-Cola making British Guiana (as it was named) the first country in South America to bottle this beverage. The popular range of I-Cee flavours was
introduced in 1952. The production of XM Rum was expanded and became the No.1 Rum in 1959.

Long before Peter took over, the Cocoa and Chocolate business and the Shipping Agency had been relinquished. The range of interests was still fairly wide and included a soft drink factory, rum
bond, bottling plant, liquor store, retail bars, hotel and pawnbrokery most of which had been carried on and centred at D'Aguiar Bros. Ltd. in Brickdam, Stabroek since 1896.

In 1955, Peter D'Aguiar promoted Banks Breweries Limited, the first public company with a widespread ownership. In 1966 the Private Family Company (D'Aguiar Bros. Ltd.) was converted into a public
company, D'Aguiar Bros. (D.I.H.) Limited with a share capital of $1.0 M (one million dollars).

1969 saw the merger of D'Aguiar Bros. (DIH) Ltd. with Banks Breweries Ltd. into a new company called Banks DIH Limited with a Share Capital of $4,140,000.00.

The Company's headquarters was moved to Thirst Park where the production complex and the head office, known as the Rotunda, were built in 1969.

The cost of the modern complex on 13.2 acres of land designed by a young Polish Architect, Marian Dorr-Dorynek at that time, was valued $7,000,000.00.

Since then the number of shareholders increased from 5,000 to 8,500 and employees from 300 to 1,500 with most of the company's regular employees becoming shareholders.

On Thursday, 30th March, 1989 at 5.00 a.m., London time, Peter S. D'Aguiar , age 76, died at the London Hospital, England where he had travelled to obtain medical attention.

During his tenure of service (1934 - 1989) the company showed a record of rapid development and continued progress and has emerged as one of the most dynamic, efficient and profitable businesses in
the Caribbean.

Banks DIH Limited is now a multi-billion dollar company and is headed by Mr. Clifford Barrington Reis, CCH, who was appointed Chairman/Managing Director after the death of Mr. Peter S. D'Aguiar
thereby heralding the dawn of a new era in the company's history.
Undaunted by the magnitude of the added responsibilities, the new Chairman immediately got down to the job of keeping Banks DIH Limited on its chartered course of continued development. Clifford
Reis' management style could be described as 'hands-on' and manages through consultation, help and advice from the Directors, Executive Board Members and the Worker Management Participation Board.

Over the past six (6) years, Mr. Clifford B. Reis, has distinguished himself as an astute and competent leader as Chairman and Managing Director of the company.

He has been very successful in diversifying the business, motivating his Executives and Employees in their pursuit of excellence and has invested over 3.4 billion dollars in new products and
upgrading and replacing machinery, packaging and buildings.

The product range carried by the company reaches the homes of all Guyanese as the company has a fleet of over two hundred and seventy vehicles and has branches in Bartica, Berbice, Essequibo,
Linden, Parika and Agencies in all three counties.

Some of the products are also enjoyed in the Caribbean and further afield. Banks Beer is also produced under franchise in the United States of America and Canada.

Quality and standards are maintained at a high level as evident in 1979 at the International Wine and Spirits Competition when the company's Rum won three outstanding awards as follows - 1. XM

Liquid Gold (10 Yr old) won a double gold medal 2. XM Liquid Gold (10 Yr Old) won a bronze award. The Coca-Cola award No 1 position for three consecutive years (1993-1995) as well as being awarded
a bronze medal for producing an exceptionally high quality of beer, from the Institute of International Quality in Rome in 1995.

Training at all levels is aggressively being pursued and employees are encouraged through Worker Participation and various incentives and benefits to develop their full potential thereby maximising
their contribution to the company.

The degree of commitment is achieved through the implementation of policies that are fair, non-discriminatory and which provide real opportunities for development.

From 1994 to 1995 over $500 M was spent in developing 50 acres of land at Houston for an employees' housing scheme.Seventy (70) houses have been built and sold at cost and are presently occupied by
happy employees and their families.

The excellent results over the years reflect the benefits from past and present investment.

The Chairman and Board of Directors salute their predecessors and wish to thank all staff and customers for their support and contribution in making Banks DIH Limited 'the success story it is
today.'

Historical Perspective of the Essequibo Branch

Banks DIH Limited - Essequibo Branch, is located on the western bank of the Essequibo River called Airy Hall, approximately 75 kilometers from Georgetown.

The operations of Essequibo Branch started in the 1960's at Onderneeming. The beginnings of this branch started from a rented residence here, and an open yard in Adventure, which served as the
Depot and Warehouse. The mode of transportation is through the waterway of Essequibo River by boat, being the primary way to receive stocks from Georgetown. Another is by the ferry service to reach
this destination also. Distribution to customers along the Coastline was done by animal drawn carts.

On the Transport & Harbours Department's wharf at Adventure, permission was granted to Banks DIH Limited to store their stock "gratis", and freight was only collected for stocks sent. The empties
were brought to Georgetown without any charges to the Company.

The growth of the business resulted in the acquisition of a property in Adventure. This property was transformed into a Bond/Warehouse, Branch Office and the Manager's residence. This significant
improvement was bolstered with the acquisition of two trucks for distribution throughout the Essequibo Coast. The branch's operation started with six members of staff.

The branch's operation continued to grow and with the advent of 1970, demanded a staff of nine persons to service an area of approximately 38 ½ miles. Agents were appointed for outlying areas, such
as Wakenaam Island, Moruka and the Pomeroon River. By this time, the ferry service became inadequate to supply stocks in time. At this period, a private contractor was hired to ferry stocks from
Georgetown to Riverstown Creek on a regular basis. At Riverstown Creek another Bond was constructed.

The blossoming of this successful venture greeted the 1980's, where Banks DIH Limited purchased a portion of land at Airy Hall. This was intended for the construction of a wharf on the Essequibo
waterfront for ocean-going vessels. The 1990's saw the fruition of a massive complex. In 1991, the Chairman - Mr. Clifford Barrington Reis commissioned a complex comprising a wharf, a massive
Warehouse, Vehicle Workshop, Branch Office, and Manager's Residence.

The Essequibo Branch now at Airy Hall under one roof, continues to serve the entire Essequibo Coast inclusive of Moruka, Wakenaam and the Pomeroon River, along with its Agents. The Branch now has a
total staff of thirty-five persons and a fleet of eight vehicles and a lift truck to continue its excellent service to Essequibo fondly known as the Cinderella County.

Historical Perspective of the Linden Branch

Banks DIH Limited - Linden Branch is located on the eastern bank of the Demerara River approximately sixty-five miles from Georgetown in a township known as Linden, formerly called Mackenzie.

During the 1960's and 1970's Banks DIH Limited supplied their merchandise through two agents to Linden and its outlying areas. The only mode of transportation during this time to the area was
through the waterway of the Demerara River by boat to Dutchie Boat Landing in Linden. Later in this era, a two lane highway was constructed between Linden and Georgetown, thus making communication
easier and faster.

During the 1980's, the town of Linden experienced an economic boom, which saw an increase in activities resulting in increased sales of their products. In March 1990, due to heavy demands for the
products, Banks DIH Limited decided to open a branch in this township with a staff of four.

The business grew rapidly seeing the erection of a Bond/Warehouse in 1993 in order to be of better service to the area. The community requested that Banks DIH Limited should offer the services of a
fast food restaurant to the residents. After careful consideration, a feasibility study was undertaken by Mr. Kenneth De Abreu and his Management team of Demico House.

On the 24th July 1994, the Chairman Mr. Clifford Barrington Reis had the pleasure of officially opening the Arvida Qik Serv Restaurant, along with Mr. Kenneth De Abreu and other Senior Executives.

Currently, the Arvida Qik Serv Restaurant has a staff of fifteen persons inclusive of two Supervisors, and overlooked by the Manager of the Linden Branch. The Linden Branch now carries a staff of
twenty-eight persons.

Distribution continues on both Banks of the Demerara River, and with the all-weather roads constructed to the hinterland areas, considerable growth in sales has been achieved. The lumber, bauxite
mining and gold mining businesses at Arioma, Kwakwani, Mabura, Butakari and Sherima, to name a few are responsible for the successful operations of the Linden Branch.

Agents are appointed for areas as far as Mahdia and Lethem and to some large companies who operate further in the interior locations.

Historical Perspective of the Bartica Branch

Banks DIH Limited - Bartica Branch, is located on the south western bank of the Essequibo River approximately 100 kilometres from Georgetown in a township known as Bartica.

During the early 1960's, Banks DIH Limited supplied their merchandise, primarily rum, beer and soft drinks through an agent in Bartica. One mode of transportation is through the waterway of the
Demerara River linking to the Essequibo River to Bartica by boat. Another is by heavy duty vehicles driving through Linden and crossing the Essequibo River by pontoon. Smaller vehicles can use the
ferry service to reach this destination also.

Banks DIH Limited established its Bartica Branch in 1969 due to the demands for its products which by now has grown considerably. It began its operations with a staff of . For the next five
successive years, stock was primarily shipped by the Government Ferry Service to this location. However, due to the increased sales and demands for its product range, the Company had to charter
boats to satisfy the needs of this region. Today Banks DIH Limited ship their merchandise through its own Shipping Company - Caribanks .

The business continued to grow rapidly resulting in the erection of a new building with modern facilities to house the branch's operations. This new building was commissioned by the Chairman- Mr.
Clifford Barrington Reis on 12th September 1997.

Currently, the Bartica Branch has a staff of persons inclusive of Supervisors, and its Manager.

The distribution of the Company's merchandise, reaches to many locations in the interior primarily the lumber and goldmining areas, and there is tremendous scope for further development.

History:
General history of the company
History of D.D.L. dates back to the early 17th century when Guyana (then British Guiana) had a large number of sugar estates each with its own small distillery converting molasses, the major
by-product into rum. Each sugar estate produced its own distinctive rum and each rum was given a mark e.g. SWR, AN, ICBU depending upon the sugar estate where it was produced.

These rums were shipped to England and thus began worldwide trading under the Demerara rum name, which today only can be applied to rums distilled in Guyana.

In those early days most of the distilleries were owned by the English companies Booker Bros. McConnel & Company Limited, trading as Booker Rum Company, and Sandbach Parker Holdings, trading as Diamond Liquors Limited. These two companies were amalgamated in 1976 as Guyana Liquor Corp. and in 1983, this was changed to Demerara Distillers Limited.

By 1960, technological advances and market demands brought about the amalgamation of the many small distilleries into four distilleries, which were further consolidated into D.D.L. with one
distillery operation at Plantation Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara River.

The story of Demerara Distillers started in 1670 when every sugar estate had its own rum still, and a group of sugar cane producers formed an exporting co-operative. This early production of rum for sailors was the beginning of the company today.

From over 300 sugar estates to one company!
In the 17th and 18th centuries, there were in excess of 200 small distilleries operating in Guyana, each attached to the existing sugar plantations, each with its own special blend of rum. However, following the years of consolidation and amalgamation, there remains today just the one unrivalled distillery at Plantation Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara - wholly owned and operated by Demerara Distillers Limited.
At Diamond, the standards and methods of this age-old industry have been maintained and the unique original heritage stills and equipment have been preserved in working order – all operating in tandem with the most up to date production technology.

Unrivalled bulk rum capacity
The distillery has the capacity to produce in excess of 26 M litres of pure alcohol annually, and is the largest supplier of bulk rums and alcohols from the Caribbean to brand owners in Europe and North America. The company's impressive list of clientele includes companies such as Diageo, Jim Beam Brands, Hiram Walker, Allied Distillers, and Corby's.

The El Dorado brand - an unrivalled range
From the launch in 1992 by Demerara Distillers of their El Dorado range of Demerara Rums on the local and international market, the brand has gone from strength to strength, epitomising the unique quality of the true taste of Demerara.
It was in that year that DDL became the first rum producer in the world to market a premium quality aged rum: El Dorado 15 Year Old Special Reserve. Since then this superb spirit has become the internationally recognised benchmark for aged rums and the company has gone on to develop an unrivalled portfolio of Age Statement Rums.

Green credentials
DDL also possesses its own CO2 plant, utilising the waste product from the distillery to produce piped liquified gas for their aerated beverage plant, as well as cylinder gas for industrial use and dry ice for the fishing and frozen food industries.
Warehousing for over 50,000 barrels ensures availability of aged spirits for premium rums
In addition, the company has a gin-flavouring still, liqueur production facilities and raw sugar caramel plants. The corporate head office, marketing division, central quality control laboratory, R&D department, export terminal and shipping office are all located in Georgetown.

The choice of the Royal Navy
Rum’s association with the Royal Navy first began in 1677 when the Admirality decided to issue an official daily rum ration for all ratings. When the Port Mourant Estate distillery - one of the oldest in the world - was established in 1732, the extra character and depth of the rum from its Double Wooden Pot Still made it the choice of the Royal Navy.

British Guiana and The Estate Rums
By the 1814 the three Guyanese colonies were handed over to the British and merged into British Guiana in 1831.
In 1834 slavery was abolished and a plantation labour force was imported from Europe, China and India. Colonial rums, utilising British blending, were becoming more popular and the first Old Vatted Demerara (OVD) was made with Guyanese Port Mourant as the major component.
By the second half of the 18th century, sugar estates were closing and consolidating with only 180 remaining and in 1880 the Wooden Framed Coffey Still was installed at the Enmore Estate distillery. Each estate produced its own distinctive rum which was given its own mark or Marque identifying its origin. (eg. SWR, ICBU, PM, EHP, LBI, AN) These rums were shipped to England, establishing the worldwide trading name of Demerara Rum.
Rum was now established as a polite middle class drink - replacing gin.

The True Taste of Demerara
More and more of the sugar estates and distilleries merged during the early twentieth century culminating in the amalgamation of all the various stills, equipment and expertise in 1998 by Demerara Distillers Limited at the last remaining Estate, Diamond, on the East Bank of the Demerara River.

The ‘Benchmark’
From the launch of the El Dorado range of Demerara Rums in 1992 on the local and international market, the brand has gone from strength to strength, epitomising the unique quality of the true taste of Demerara.
The significance of this is that each age statement specifically indicates the youngest rum in the blend, even though the oldest may be many years older.

Demerara County, Guyana, has been steeped in the history of sugar and rum production since the 17th century.
A hundred years later over 300 sugar estates had their own distillery producing their own signature rums. Through the centuries these estates and distilleries have been amalgamated, but these important marques and the original stills were preserved.
Today, Demerara Distillers operates the last remaining distillery in Guyana at Plantation Diamond on the East bank of the Demerara River. Here they have consolidated all the old original stills, marques and traditional skills which make Demerara Rum so distinctive.
With its 9 different stills, no other rum distillery in the world offers such a variety and range of over twenty different styles of rum.

Age statement
The flavours of the oak wood from the barrels and the complexities of the interaction between wood and spirit are greatly enhanced by the tropical climate of Guyana. The ageing process there is greatly increased by the high humidity and steady temperature – resulting in an El Dorado 8 year old rum, for instance, having a maturity equal to that of a 16 year old spirit produced in colder climates.
El Dorado rums are blended selections of different ‘vintages’ or batches of rums from different stills - aged in oak barrels. The age statement specifically indicates the youngest rum in the blend, even though the oldest may be many years older. This rule is the same as the one for Scotch Whisky and is used for rums produced in English-speaking countries. In contrast, the age statement on the label of rums produced by the Solera system indicates the oldest rum contained in the blend. This is a traditional method of ageing used in Sherry production and is usually associated with rums from Spanish-speaking countries.

The stills
Demerara Distillers is the unique position in the world of rum in continuing to operate the original production Stills used on three of the great Sugar Estates of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Uitvlught
Originally a Dutch estate located on the Atlantic coast, west of the Demerara river. This rum was distilled using the famous Port Morant still, the last remaining Demerara Vat Still - that produces
heavier rum that suited the additional Hermitage cask evolution.
[Source: Jamaica Gleaner News, 2006]

Port Morant
The Port Morant Estate in Guyana was established in 1732 and was one of the earliest to produce the unique Demerara style of rum for which the country became so famous. The Demerara Vat Stills used at the estate were moved to Georgetown as part of the reorganization of the industry some years ago. These very large pot stills, which are quite unique, are still producing their special style of heavy rum, much sought after for blending in the traditional style.
[Source: Bristol Spirits Limited, 2010]

Versailles
The Versailles estate lay to the east of the Demerara River, which enters the Atlantic at Georgetown, capital of Guyana. The area has been famous for centuries for the quality of its sugar cane and molasses, from which the Demerara rums draw their richness. Like so many estates and distilleries, it no longer exists, although the still bearing the Versailles name has been moved several times. It now rests at Diamond Distillery in Georgetown.

Versailles, although never as successful as Port Morant in establishing is own identity, does possess a unique style. This is because two different stills, with different capacities, are set up on
either side of the condenser (rather than in sequence) and they feed it alternately. This yields a lighter distillate, lower in ester content. It should be noted that although pot stills have been
used in the production of this rum, it has only been distilled once, although it has been fed by two different stills. Those familiar with Cognac and Pays d’Auge Calvados tend to see all pot still
products as the result of double distillation. The idiosyncrasies of the Caribbean production break all conventions and result in wide and delightful variations of style and taste.

Diamond
The Daimond Distillery has the world's oldest working wooden Coffey [ie. continuous] still, which is reckoned to have been producing rum for over 150 years.

Enmore
The Wooden Continuous Coffey or EHP Wooden Still is the last fully working example of its kind in the world today. It is similar, if not identical, to the very first continuous still constructed and patented by an Irish excise officer, Aeneas Coffey in 1832, after whom the Still was named.
This Still is the original and last surviving one from the Enmore Sugar Estate founded nearly 200 years ago by Edward Henry Porter. Since 1880 it has been producing a medium bodied rum with a mild, fruity aroma, and its unique flavour is attributed to the wooden structure of this tall still, described by the rum writer, Dave Broom, as ‘looking like a giant filing cabinet’.
While rum from this Still is used in the blending of other El Dorado rums, the El Dorado EHP Marque Single Barrel Rum is a single distillate from this venerable but highly productive Still.

The Wooden Pot Stills
Demerara Distillers benefits from being able to operate the last two original Wooden Pot Stills (one Single and one Double) in the world. √Over 250 years old, and originally used to produce the Demerara Navy Rums in the past, they are nowadays often referred to by their old names of Demerara Vat Stills.
The Double Wooden Pot Still originated from the Port Mourant Estate, founded in 1732, and was later moved first to Uitvlught and then, in 2000, to Diamond. In the same way the original Single Wooden Pot Still was moved from its original home at Versailles on the west bank of the Demerara River, via Enmore and Uitvlught to its present home at Diamond. These two unique copper-necked Stills are valued by blenders and other experts as a source of very heavy bodied, very flavourful and deeply aromatic rums – the ancient Green Heartwood of the Still playing a major role in the development of these distinctive characteristics. While rum from this Still is used in the blending of other El Dorado rums, the El Dorado PM Marque Single Barrel Rum is a single distillate from the Double Wooden Pot Still from the old Port Mourant Estate.

The French Savalle Still
Demerara Distillers continues to use the original four-column metal French Savalle Still inherited from the 18th century Uitvlught Estate on the west coast of Demerara county. The rum produced from this Still is characterised by a pronounced sweet, sugar cane nose combined with a dry medium-bodied flavour – qualities unmatchable by any other distiller.
The modern version of this still is versatile enough to produce nine completely different types (marks) of rum ranging from from the very light through to heavy bodied rums. While rum from the original French Savalle Still is used in the blending of other El Dorado rums, the El Dorado ICBU Marque Single Barrel Rum is a single distillate from this Still.

On the subject of divestment, I would like to share with you my experience with the recent divestment of a wholly-owned Government company of which I have been chairman for a number of years, I don't know how many of you saw the report that came out in the press some time in August. Excerpts of that release make interesting reading:

The Government of Jamaica is pleased to announce the restructuring of the State-Owned National Rums of Jamaica Ltd., (NRJ) the holding company of Clarendon Distillers Ltd., Long Pond Distillers Ltd. and Innswood Distillery Ltd. (collectively the NRJ Group).

Under agreements signed with Demerara Distillers Ltd. of Guyana, The West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd. (a subsidiary of Goddard Enterprises Ltd. of Barbados) and DIAGEO North America Inc. (a
subsidiary of Diageo PLC the World's largest Spirit Company), the three investors will bring new equity investments totaling U.S. million to the NRJ Group.

With the injection of this new capital, Demerara Distillers Ltd., The West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd. and the State-Owned National Sugar Company Ltd. will each own 33.3 per cent of the shares in
NRJ.

NRJ will hold 73 per cent of the shares in Clarendon Distillers Ltd. at Monymusk with 27 per cent held by Diageo North America Inc., through its subsidiary Trelawny Estates Ltd. Long Pond
Distillers Ltd. and Inswood Distillery Ltd. will continue to be wholly-owned subsidiaries of NRJ.

This new investment capital along with funding from the European Union's Integrated Development Programme for the Caribbean rum sector will be utilised to finance a major modernisation and
expansion programme of the NRJ Group. NRJ, which is a leading supplier of Jamaican bulk rum, is also looking to develop a brand portfolio in order to facilitate its entry into the value-added
market.

The board of directors of NRJ will be restructured to include representatives of the new investors and we wish to record our thanks to the long standing outgoing chairman Mr. Howard Hamilton who
has kindly consented to remain on the board. Mr. Evon Brown will also continue as group CEO and a director of NRJ and its subsidiaries.

Howard L. Hamilton, C.D., J.P., is a former chairman of Caymanas Track Limited. He is the current president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders' Association.
